Week One
*Day 1: Read through Course Syllabus. Complete Student Interest Survey and take home Parent/Guardian form (to be completed for homework). View "Why Writing Matters" slideshow. Complete the Writer's Creed and Writing Goal Sheets. Read (or watch) and discuss "Where Writing Hides" and label Conventional Editing Marks worksheet.
*Day Two: Review convention marks. Define the 6+1 Traits. We will view the FIRST PERSON slideshow, discuss, and journal. You will need to complete the "I Say, You Say" graphic organizer
*Day Three: Review of Conventions. Read and discuss "Whiy I Write Poetry" and "Chop." We will journal for 15 minutes, then discuss Poetic effects and devices.Students will draft "I Say, You Say," poems and workshop in a Silent Reading Table format. Students will then revise their poem for word choice using thesauruses and feedback from peers. There is a quiz tomorrow on the editing marks.
*Day Four: Students will take the editing marks quiz and complete a journal. We will then finalize our poems and create a collage to go along with the poem. Students will present finished poems and collages to the class.
WEEK TWO:
*Day 5:
We will review for your quiz on standard editing marks tomorrow and journal for fifteen minutes: Why does personal expression matter? How do you express yourself? Write about a time you spoke up about something-- or a time when you stayed sildent. What happened because of the choice you made? We will view and discuss the IT'S PERSONAL slideshow. We will then complete pre-writing for our second writing assignment on Vignettes and will discuss the difference between writing "short" and "long." We will start Absolutely True Diary of a Partime Indian (Pgs 1-15) and will complete Pgs 6-10 in the ATDPTI Packet.
*Day 6:
Today's journal: Write about your childhood. What memories do you have? How did you act then? How have you changed? What life lessons have you learned so far? At this point, what do you believe to be true?
We will read ATDPTI Pgs 15-24 and complete the packet Pgs 11-12. We will also read "Indian Education" by SHerman Alexie and draft a five paragraph Vignette essay.
*Day 7:
Today's journal: Describe someone you know who is funny, or who takes a humorous approach to life. How does this person handle stress or problems? Why might having a sense of humor be important when facing life's challenges?
We will read ATDPTI Pgs 25-32 and complete the packet Pgs 14-15. There will be a quiz tomorrow on pgs 1-32.
We will read "The Power of a Joke" and students will participate in a peer response workshop and a self-revision workshop.
*Day 8:
Students will take a quiz on Pgs 1-32 of ATDPTI.
Today's journal: Reflection: What activity engaged you most this week? At what moment were you most distracted? What was most helpful about class this week? What did you find most puzzling/confusing? What surprised you most about class this week?
We will discuss bias and take an online survey about Hidden Biases at www.understandingprejudice.org
Students will type up the second draft of their Vignette Essays.
WEEK THREE
Day 9: *Last week's Day 8 got moved due to the pretest*
Today's journal: What activity engaged you most last week? At what moment were you most distracted? What was most helpful about class last week? What did you find most puzzling/confusing? What surprised you most about class?
Today we will complete the ATDPTI Packet: SADDR Character Analysis. Students will have individual conferences about their Vignettes. We will go over the rubric and students will log in and type their second drafts.
Day 10:
Today's journal: Will be randomly generated from class questions and comments
Today we will complete vocab and root work, Pgs 18-19 and read "Hope Against Hope." We will preview our next unit by reading a skit from "The Bully Game." Final revision workshop: final copies due tomorrow.
Day 11:
Today's journal: What are the different types of bullying? Which tyes do y think are most hurtful? Describe a time you bullied someone or were bullied.
We will read Pgs 44-53. Students will illustrate vignettes and complete ATDPTI work.
WEEK FOUR

Today's Journal will be randomly determined bythe class.
We will continue reading our novel and will fill out corresponding packet work.
Day13:
Today's journal: Write about a relationship your or a friend have had. What makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy? What do you think is most important in a healthy relationship? Why?
Today we will continue reading our novel and will start your digital projectsabout bullying.
Day 14:
Today's journal: Do you agree with Tupac that love is complicated? Why? Write a letter to yourself: what advice would you give yourself about the relationships you've had or the realtionships you want for the future?
We will read 82-98 and continue work on your digital projects.
Day 15:
Today's journal: What can be gained from relationships? What can be endangered by relationships? Which relationships in your life are most important to you? What do you bring to each relationship?
Today we will finish work on your digital projects.
WEEK FIVE
Day 16:
Today's Journal: Todays journal will be randomly created from something that inspired me over the weekend :)
We will continue reading and you will have most of the period to type up your personal growth drafts.
Day 17:
Today's journal: Make a list of the 10 things you have most frequently on your mind. Then make a list of the top 10 things you think all humans have in common. be prepared to discuss.
Today you will continue your personal growth essays and we will continue our work in the novel.
Day 18:
Today's journal: Who means the most to you in your life? How have these people influenced your thinking? What movies, books, TV shows, etc have had an influence on you?
today you will revise your drafts.
WEEK SIX
Day 19:
Today's Journal: Credo poem. Pick up a copy in class.
Today we will continue reading our novel. You will have most of the class period to revise and finalize your writing essays about a personal journey you are on.
Day 20
Today's Journal: College. Do you plan on going to college? Why? Which colleges interest you? What would be the most fun about going to college? What would be most difficult?
Today we will continue reading our novel and will also start a research proposal. Students will complete a WebQuest about Sherman Alexie.
Day 21
Today's Journal: How did the students in the slideshow show perseverance? How did their choices change their lives? How did their choices bring about greater social change? What is something you would be willing to fight for? How can you show perseverance in your daily life?
We will do vocab and root work today, read "IU" and discuss a slideshow about teens who made unprecedented accomplishments, and draft the letters to the university of your choice
Day 22
Today's Journal: Who makes up your support network? Who do you go to if you need to talka bout something that is bothering you? Who can you trust? Who do you know will be there for you, no matter what? Finally-- how do you support yourself? How can you be a source of support to your friends?
Today we will read an article about theories of destiny and you will start your next research assignment.
WEEK SEVEN
Day 23
Today's Journal: Reflection on what we need to do individually and as a class to improve our grades.
Today we will read Pages 179-196 and discuss. You will begin your next writing assignment.
Day 24:
Today's Journals: You will write a reflection on the articles we cover in class. Why do you think we are learning about this? What are your initial thoughts?
We will read the next two chapters in our book. You will continue your writing project.
Day 25:
Today's Journal: How is your identity shaped by your environment and your culture? How has living in your neighborhood and with your family changed you? Write about some of the challenges you face on a day to day basis. How can facing these challenges
make you a stronger person?
We will continue reading in our novel. You will make corrections to your drafts.
Day 26
Today's Journal: · Write about a memory you have of your family: a family tradition, a family reunion or gathering, the rules that exist in your family, etc.
Today you will finalize your writing.
WEEK EIGHT
Day 27
Today's Journal: Make a list of at least ten questions you have about our novel.
Day 28
Today's Journal: Write a letter to one of the characters in the novel. What would you tell him/her? What questions would you want to ask him/her?
Day 29
Today's Journal: Today you will learn about your classmates instead of completing a journal.
Day 30
Today's Journal: what educational topics would you like to cover in the last weeks of class?
