*Day 1: Read through Course Syllabus. Complete Student Interest Survey and take home Parent/Guardian form (to be completed for homework). View "Why Writing Matters" slideshow. Complete the Writer's Creed and Writing Goal
Sheets. Read (or watch) and discuss "Where Writing Hides" and label Conventional Editing Marks worksheet.
*Day Two: Review convention marks. Define the 6+1 Traits. Today we will learn about our novel's author, Susan campbell Bartoletti, as well as the historical context of the novel. We will watch Part 1 of the Documentary: "The Rise of Hitler" and learn vocabulary related to the time period and the Nazi party.
*Day Three: We will review for the editing quiz tomorrow. We will also finish "The Rise of Hitler", compare fascism and communism, and learn some of the German words in the novel.
*Day Four: Today we will take the Leona pre-test.

have acted zealously for a cause they believed in. When is it good to be
zealous? When can it be dangerous to be
zealous?
Day 6: Today we will do our refresher and journal
adamant: firmly decided; unwilling to give in. Make a list of the
qualities that you are adamant about when considering a best
friend or significant other. What kinds of behaviors wouldn't you tolerate? What
actions or qualities would you be able to forgive? Also consider: what
expectations are you adamant about keeping for yourself? What
rules have you set for yourself that you are not willing to break or compromise

be your own "moral code." What do you think is an appropriate punishment for

Today we will journal, read pages 1-16 and answer comprehension questions, and finish our introduction to the novel packet.

Day 10:
Today we will journal, complete vocabulary words for the first part of the novel, read pages 17-27, practice close reading a critical passage, and will start on your first project. You are to create a slideshow presentation about one of the concentration camps mentioned in the novel.

Day 11:
Today we will journal and take a drug/awareness survey. We will read pages 27-41 and you will continue work on your project.
wrath: violent anger/rage. Write a Halloween story where a witch/warlock places a curse on someone for what he/she did. How does the wrath of the curse play out-- what happens to the person?? How can the curse be lifted?
Day 12:
Today we will read 41-53 and journal. You will have a second day to work on your concentration camp project.
aloof: distant, especially in social situations. What are some reasons someone might seem aloof to others? Think about a time you met someone who seemed aloof? What is the best way to respond to someone who is acting aloof?

Day 13
Today we will complete the Venn diagram in your packet about the difference between the 13 Articles of Faith (Helmuth) and the Nazi Primer (the Nazi Code). You will turn in your packet and finish working on your presentations.
Journal: Anguish: severe mental/physical pain. ¨What are some situations that might cause a person to feel severe physical anguish? What are some situations that might cause a person to feel emotional or mental anguish? ¨Make a list
of ways that people could cope with anguish in healthy ways.
Day 14
Today you will journal. We will take a look at different forms of propaganda the Nazis used to manipulate and control Germany. We will complete some vocab practice and read pages 54-60.
Journal: Apprehensive: fearful about what may happen. ¨Describe a time when you felt apprehensive. What
did you do in the situation?¨Can feeling apprehensive ever be a good thing? Explain.
Day 15
Today we will journal and go through your concentration camp presentations. We will read 60-70 and you will complete day 1 of your small group reading sheet.
Journal: Impetuous: impulsive/sudden.¨Many people think being impetuous is a negative quality. ¨Brainstorm a list of situations in which being impetuous would be positive. What jobs would require a person to be impetuous? Would you enjoy a job like that? Explain.
Day 16
Today we will journal and have a discussion about banned books and censorship. We will also practice close reading, learn vocabulary , and read pages 71-80.
Journal: Whim: a sudden, impulsive idea/action. ¨If you could go anywhere and do anything right this minute on a whim, what would you do?
WEEK FIVE: This week you will have subs on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. You will watch the movie "Beautiful Creatures" and compare the movie to our novel.

belligerent: eager to fight. ¨Describe a belligerent person you know or a belligerent scene you witnessed.

implore: beg or plead. ¨Write a funny story about a cat who is afraid of mice. Pretend the cat is too afraid to chase the mice away, so he or she has to implore the mice to lead. OR Describe a time when you had to implore someone to get something you wanted.

welfare: the state of health, happiness, and well-being. Is the welfare of the general population more important than the welfare of a select few? Explain. What can be done to ensure the welfare of both the individual and society at large?

Today we will journal and finish watching "Beautiful Creatures." We will then compare the characters, plots, and themes of our novel and our book.
vulnerable: capable of being attacked or injured. In a Greek myth, a baby named Achilles was held by his heel and dipped into a river in order to give him protection against harm and death. The area of his heel where he was held was the only spot where Achilles was vulnerable. Invent your own story about a character who is vulnerable in only one way.

Today we will read pages 112-131 and complete your Small Group Reading Sheet: Day 4: Make a connection between the book and your own life. You will also have some time to read through the Teen Ink magazine of the month and complete a response guide.
Burden: a difficult responsibility. Make a list of the burdens you have in life. Then, make a list of your blessings.
Day 22:
Today we will journal and finish your packet on Nazi Propaganda. We will also read Pages 131-151.
impudent: rude or disrespectful. Write an apology to someone for something impudent you have done. As an added challenge... try to make it a poem.
Day 23:
Today we will read pages 151-163 and you will start work on your final project. We will also journal.
vintage: old-fashioned/ out of date/from the past. Imagine what life was like fifty years ago. How has music, style, money, jobs, etc changed? What did your parents/grandparents grow up with that is considered vintage today?
WEEK SEVEN
Day 24
Today we will do your refresher, and then you will have the remainder of the period to work on a district-wide Reading benchmark exam. This exam will count as a grade.
Day 25
Today we finished the novel and our packet. You have till today to finish your final project.

Today we will journal, take your final exam, and look at the Stanley Milgram Obedience study.

Today we will journal, analyze a clip from V for Vendetta, and do a station activity relating to the life of Gerda, a Holocaust survivor.
clarity: clearness. Invent a situation in which a lack of clarity resulted in an amusing situation. How did the miscommunication occur?

Today we will journal, learn historical context of the Holocaust, watch a short documentary about Gerda's life, and complete the 20 pounds activity.
