*Day 1: Read through Course Syllabus. Complete Student Interest Survey and take home Parent/Guardian form (to be completed for homework). View "Why Writing Matters" slideshow. Complete the Writer's Creed and Writing Goal Sheets. Read (or
watch) and discuss "Where Writing Hides" and label Conventional Editing Marks
worksheet.
*Day Two: Review convention marks. Define the 6+1 Traits. Today we will complete an anticipation guide and will read an article about literature and censorship. Students will also examine 60 of the top 100 banned books and discuss.
*Day Three: Today we will review for the editing quiz tomorrow. We will read about Ray Bradbury and Heinrich Heine on book burning and the Nazis. We will also read about the 1950s and watch a clip to build background knowledge.
* Day Four: Today we will take the Leona Pre-test and will also compare sci-fi and dystopian literature.

Tuesday: Abound: To be present in large numbers or amounts. ¨The United States is a place where opportunities abound. Make a “bucket list”: What do you want to see, do, explore, or experience before the end of your life? (Make a list of as many things as you can).
Wednesday: Idle: lazy, not useful. ¨Some people enjoy summer vacation because it’s a time for them to be idle. Others prefer to spend their summers being active. ¨Which do you prefer– being idle or being active? Explain your favorite ways to do both?

This week, due to the shortened schedule, we will only have time to do our refreshers and journal each day. The prompts are listed below:
Vocabulary Journal Prompts:
Day 5: Zealous: Filled with a strong desire to accomplish something. ¨Describe an unbelievable homework assignment on an imaginary day when your teacher became a little too zealous OR Brainstorm a list of people have acted zealously for a cause they believed in. When is it good to be zealous? When can it be dangerous to be zealous?
Day 6: adamant: firmly decided; unwilling to give in. Make a list of the qualities that you are adamant about when considering a best friend or significant other. What kinds of behaviors wouldn't you tolerate? What actions or qualities would you be able to forgive? Also consider: what expectations are you adamant about keeping for yourself? What rules have you set for yourself that you are not willing to break or compromise over?
Day 7: immoral: going against what people consider to be good behavior. As young children, we are taught the difference between right and wrong. Write what you consider to be your own "moral code." What do you think is an appropriate punishment for immoral behavior?
Day 8: wry: crooked or twisted; cleverly funny. Do you have a wry sense of humor? What makes you laugh? Do you prefer slapstick comedy, sarcasm, or jokes? Describe your sense of humor.
WEEK THREE
Day 9:
Today we will journal, learn vocabulary in the novel, read pages 1-14. You will have time to finish your Utopia project.
adept: very skilled at something. Describe some skills you are adept at doing. Also, what are some skills you would like to become adept at doing?
Day 10:
Today we will journal and read pages 14-27. We will begin your Utopia presentations.
immune: not affected or influenced by something. How would the world change if all people suddenly became immune to all diseases? How would life be different? What if people were immune to fear? Immune to peer pressure?
Day 11:
Today we will journal and read pages 28-41. You will continue with your utopia presentations.
wrath: violent anger/rage. Write a Halloween story where a witch/warlock places a curse on someone for what he/she did. How does the wrath of the curse play out-- what happens to the person?? How can the curse be lifted?
Day 12:
Today you will finalize your utopia presentations and complete a reflection of others' utopias. We will read Pages 41-48.
aloof: distant, especially in social situations. What are some reasons someone might seem aloof to others? Think about a time you met someone who seemed aloof? What is the best way to respond to someone who is
acting aloof?

WEEK FOUR
Day 13
Journal: Anguish: severe mental/physical pain. ¨What are some situations that might cause a person to feel severe physical anguish? What are some situations that might cause a person to feel emotional or mental anguish? ¨Make a list of ways that people could cope with anguish in healthy ways.
Today we will journal and look at vocabulary words. We will close read and also read pages 48-56.
Day 14
Journal: Apprehensive: fearful about what may happen. ¨Describe a time when you felt apprehensive. What did you do in the situation?¨Can feeling apprehensive ever be a good thing? Explain.
Today we will journal, read pages 56-63, and you will also complete Day 1 of your small group reading sheet and answer comprehension questions 1-6. You will also start your project today about your utopia reports.
Day 15
Journal: Impetuous: impulsive/sudden.¨Many people think being impetuous is a negative quality.
¨Brainstorm a list of situations in which being impetuous would be positive. What jobs would require a person to be impetuous? Would you enjoy a job like that? Explain.
Today we will journal and read pages 63-68. I will explain Fishbowl guidelines and you will write out questions, Levels 1-6. We will practice AIMS test taking strategies using questions related to the novel. You will have time to work on your projects.
Day 16
Journal: Whim: a sudden, impulsive idea/action. ¨If you could go anywhere and do anything right this minute on a whim, what would you do?
Today we will have our fishbowl and then you will have till the end of the period to finish your utopia outline.
WEEK FIVE: On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday you will have a sub. You will watch the movie "The Village" and compare the themes to our class novel.
Day 17
belligerent: eager to fight. ¨Describe a belligerent person you know or a belligerent scene you witnessed.
Day 18
implore: beg or plead. ¨Write a funny story about a cat who is afraid of mice. Pretend the cat is too afraid to chase the mice away, so he or she has to implore the mice to lead. OR Describe a time when you had to implore someone to get something you wanted.
Day 19
welfare: the state of health, happiness, and well-being. Is the welfare of the general population more important than the welfare of a select few? Explain. What can be done to ensure the welfare of both the individual and society at large?
WEEK SIX
Day 20
Today we will finish watching "The Village" and complete the movie guide comparing the movie with Fahrenheit 451. We will also read pages 91-96 in the novel.
vulnerable: capable of being attacked or injured. In a Greek myth, a baby named Achilles was held by his heel and dipped into a river in order to give him protection against harm and death. The area of his heel where he was held was the only spot where Achilles was vulnerable. Invent your own story about a character who is vulnerable in only one way.
Day 21
Today we will journal, read pages 96-101, answer the corresponding comprehension questions, and Analyze a short excerpt from the novel. You will have a chance to look through this month's Teen Ink Magazines and also complete a response.
Burden: a difficult responsibility. Make a list of the burdens you have in life. Then, make a list of your blessings.
Day 22:
Today we will journal and practice close reading. You will have the rest of the period to start the drafts of your utopia research reports.
impudent: rude or disrespectful. Write an apology to someone for something impudent you have done. As an added challenge... try to make it a poem.
Day 23:
Today we will journal and read pages 101-110. You will finish your weekly packet and have the end of the period to FINISH your rough drafts of your research reports.
vintage: old-fashioned/ out of date/from the past. Imagine what life was like fifty years ago. How has music, style, money, jobs, etc changed? What did your parents/grandparents grow up with that is considered vintage today?
WEEK SEVEN
Day 24
Today we will do your refresher, and then you will have the remainder of the period to work on a district-wide Reading
benchmark exam. This exam will count as a grade.
Day 25
Today we went over a grammar mini-lesson referring to improving the class's writing and students made final revisions to their papers.
WEEK EIGHT
Day 26
Today we will journal, learn vocab, do a writer's response, and read 113-125. We will also watch a clip about the Milgram obedience experiment.
chagrin: embarrassment caused by failure or disappointment. Think of a recent news event that might have caused someone to feel chagrin. Write a diary entry in which that person expresses his or her chagrin.
Day 27
Today we will journal, read 125-145, and watch a clip about the Stanford Prison Experiment.
clarity: clearness. Invent a situation in which a lack of clarity resulted in an amusing situation. How did the miscommunication occur?
Day 28
Today we will journal, read 145-160, finish the SPE clip, work on our packets, and take a look at the survivor personality.
compel: to force to do something. What compels you to do what you need to do? What motivates you? Who motivates or compels you to complete your responsibilities and why?

condescend: to act as if one considers oneself better than someone else. Who are some of the most condescending people you have met in life? What did they say to you that was condescending? How did you react?

indignant: angry about something unjust. Many people become indignant when they see something that is mean or unfair. What makes you indignant? What can you do about it?

industrious: constantly working or studying/ busy. In many countries, it is common for workers to receive a month or more of vacation time. In fact, many people around the world say that people in the United States work too much. Do you agree? What is the proper mix of having fun and being industrious? Does vacation time make people more or less industrious? Explain.

inevitable: not able to be prevented or avoided. Do you think the end of the world is inevitable? What do you think the apocalypse will look like?
